Students find a place for learning, personal growth and transformation

Back-to-School Q&A

“I just arrived at school and my main goal here is to improve my English so that I can help my 5-year-old son with his homework and also actively participate in his school meetings, understanding everything that is said and decided at these meetings. In addition, fluent English will allow me to interact better with the customers at my family’s Chinese restaurant, where I work. But I also have another big dream: to attend college in the USA, and I know that investing in English is a fundamental step to making my dream come true.”

Meiya Lin – Winnie (China), ESL Student

“It’s great to be back at school. I’m very happy because DALC is a great place for me – my teacher and classmates are nice and friendly. And I learn things that help me in my daily life and allow me to interact better with people on the streets, in stores, at work and everywhere. In addition to regular classes, I love the cultural event, where each student can show the culture of their home country through photos, dances, songs, small relics and typical foods.”

Tatiana Burlakova (Russia), ESL Student

“I’m from Missouri and came to NH 6 years ago. I have 5 children and 8 grandchildren, but unfortunately, after working as a school bus driver for 19 years, I lost my job, and then I went on unemployment compensation. At the unemployment office I learned that I could go back to school. That’s when I decided to do some research in Dover, where I live, and I found DALC. The atmosphere here brought back memories of 30 years ago when I was a student, and it triggered inspiration in me to get my certificate and much more.”

Donnell Conner (US), Academic Skills/HiSET Prep Student

“I came to DALC about a year ago and I’m very happy that classes are starting again. I really like the school. My teacher is very nice and so are my classmates. Here I’m learning a lot about myself and about everyday life in the United States, such as holidays and how the health system works in the country, including scheduling appointments and emergency calls. For me, the Dover Adult Learning Center is the best.”
