2025 Case for Support

For more than 50 years, adults of all ages have taken courageous steps toward a better future for themselves and their families at Dover Adult Learning Center (DALC). They come to improve their math and reading skills, earn a high school credential, learn English, or build the skills needed for a new career. Their determination is powerful, but determination alone isn’t enough. We need you.

Throughout its history, DALC has been fortunate to receive most of its funding from the state and federal government, allowing us to focus our fundraising efforts on helping adult learners face the many challenges that make education difficult: finding reliable transportation, balancing jobs and family responsibilities, and securing childcare. These supports may not always make headlines, but they make an immense difference. Without these supports, many adults would be forced to give up on their education before they even have a chance to start.

Unfortunately, our formerly consistent and reliable funding sources have been steadily shrinking. There is even a proposal to eliminate the federal adult education program and its funding, altogether. That is why we are turning to you to close the gap.

According to the most recent US Census data, here in Strafford County:

6.2% of adults over 25 have less than a high‐school diploma.

26.7% of adults have a high school education, but no further credentials.

28% of our region’s workforce is underqualified for available jobs.

Your gift ensures that every learner in our community who seeks it has the foundation they need to succeed, for instance:

Hannah, a young single mother of a 4-year-old was able to earn her high school equivalency certificate because DALC offers childcare.

Maria, who doesn’t drive and whose husband (her ride) works third shift is finally able to get to school consistently because DALC now offers transportation.

Please make your annual gift today and make it as generous as possible. Together, we can ensure that every adult who wants to learn has the opportunity and support to do so.
