English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)

ESOL are free to eligible students.

Multiple levels and subjects are offered mornings, afternoons and evenings at Dover Adult Learning Center, 61 Locust Street in Dover, in the McConnell Community Center next to the Dover Public Library.

New students must register before attending classes. Students must be 18 years of age to attend ESOL classes. Please call the office to make an appointment 742-1030.

In addition to the classes listed below we also offer Advanced classes: Academic Reading, Writing and Vocabulary, through our Enrichment Program. There is a tuition fee to take these classes.

ESOL Level I-IV Classes

ESOL classes teach basic vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation skills to non-native speakers of English through reading, writing and discussion.

Students can only begin class at the beginning of the next month.

Citizenship

Learn about US government, history and the responsibilities & opportunities of democratic life. Curriculum based on US citizen-ship application & test questions. Appropriate for intermediate or advanced ESOL students. Work on English skills & vocabulary through focused readings, class discussion and small group activities. Includes film on what makes for successful citizenship interview and a live, simulated interview.

Conversation Classes – Beginner Level

Come practice your English speaking skills: pronunciation, vocabulary, conversation and listening. Fridays during the school year 10:00 a.m. to noon

ESOL/Civics Reading and Discussion Group

(For Higher Level II and Level III)

We will be doing some reading and a lot of discussion. Practice your pronunciation, work on your grammar, learn some new words, and share your ideas. Each week you will look at some aspect of living in America choosing from: American Culture and society and both the joys and challenges of coming to live in the US, Events and famous people in US History, US Law in day to day life, Community Resources, Issues in current events and politics and Geography Facts and Skills.

Pronunciation (7 week mini-course)

(For Level II and above)

This course is for students who want to improve their pronunciation.  While most ESOL classes include some pronunciation, this is a course dedicated to speaking English more clearly so others can understand.

Grammar  (7 week mini-course)

Improve your speaking and writing skills by learning the “rules” of English.  We will study and practice the parts of speech, sentence structure, verb tenses, and more.
