Merv Faulkner is a teacher of chemistry and is the Dover Shockwave Robotics coach at Dover High School. Mr. Faulkner retired as Chief Radioman in 1995 from the United States Navy after serving twenty-one years. He served on three submarines, one surface ship and several shore stations.  He received his Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry with a minor in Oceanography from Old Dominion University in 2002. He has been teaching chemistry and mathematics for fourteen years. Mr. Faulkner’s interests include: long-distance hiking, rugby, and world travel.

Engaging Our History

In this course, students will investigate key events in United States history with an eye to critical thinking.  Beginning in the Colonial period and stopping at various points and events in our shared timeline, we’ll look at important events and the people involved from several different perspectives, writing and thinking about the facts and myths of the stories we’ve all been told.  Students will be expected to read extensively (sometimes 20-30 pages between classes) and write through a variety of genres, including response and analysis.

United in Song: Community Singing Workshop

Beginning Theory and Ear Training

Singers and musicians with a devotion to honing their musical understanding and with little or no prior knowledge of theory are encouraged to take this course. The ability to read and notate music is a plus. Topics include an overview of the piano keyboard, scales, key signatures, the circle of fifths, intervals and simple chords.  Students will also learn to recognize and write basic melodic and rhythmic patterns in music.  The course will help musicians develop skills in singing on pitch, listening, reading and writing musical notation, and analyzing what they hear.  Bring to class a folder or 3-ring binder, staff paper, pencil and anything used to take notes about lectures.

First Aid Certification

This American Heart Association Heartsaver First Aid course will teach participants how to recognize and help victims of medical and environmental emergencies and what to do if someone is injured. Subjects covered include, but are not limited to, allergic reactions, heart attack, stroke, seizures, breathing problems, diabetes, bleeding, bites and stings, heat and cold emergencies, head, neck and spinal injuries and more. This course has been updated for the new 2016 Guidelines. Participants who successfully complete the course will earn their Heartsaver First Aid certification card which is valid for 2 years. Years ago he left the seacoast area of Maine, moving to the deep south.  This move influenced his love of rural blues.  Accompanied by his wife Bev, Mike performs in public schools, retirement centers and public concerts bringing his love of the harmonica to special need students and the general population in for the form of concerts and harmonica workshops.  During the International Paralympics in 1996 in Atlanta, GA Mike and Bev were part of the Very Special Arts performances.  They also participated in the 1999 International Very Special Arts Conference in Los Angeles, CA representing Maine and Georgia.

LEARN A LIFESAVING SKILL! You will learn adult, child and infant CPR, how to use an AED and what to do if someone is choking in this American Heart Association Heartsaver CPR/AED course that has been updated for the latest guidelines. Participants who successfully complete the course will earn their Heartsaver CPR/AED certification card which is valid for 2 years. This course involves hands-on skills practice.  Participants will be sitting, standing and kneeling to learn the lifesaving skills of CPR.

Gail Klanchesser

Gail has been an American Heart Association BLS Instructor for over 15 years.  She is a Training Center Faculty Member and the Community CPR Coordinator for Portsmouth Regional Hospital.  She is certified through the American Heart Association, American Safety & Health Institute, American Red Cross and Emergency University.  Gail owns and instructs through her local business Coastal CPR & First Aid, where she offer BLS, CPR/AED, First Aid, babysitting and safety courses.

Dried Wreath Workshop @ Greenleaf Farms

Come make a beautiful,  fragrant dried wreath using herbs and dried flowers gathered here at Greenleaf Farms as well as some decorative silks. You will create a beautiful fall wreath in this workshop.
