United in Song: Community Singing Workshop

Singing Doo-Wop

Due to popular demand during a "United in Song" session, this class focuses exclusively on the timeless vocal harmony music of the 1950s and early 1960s prior to the British Invasion. Did you always wish you could sing like the Platters, the Drifters, Dion and the Belmonts, and other similar groups when you were growing up? Or are you a singer interested in exploring a genre of music that was all about the vocals? In this class, we will learn harmony parts to a variety of familiar doo-wop classics. Interested students will have an opportunity to sing lead vocals as well. The class is open to anyone, even if you have never sung in any form before. Bring your voice and a smile, and let's sing some good old doo-wop!

Acting 101

Become a Hospice Volunteer

Every year millions of Americans die from heart disease, cancer etc., and every year roughly 400,000 hospice volunteers help make a difference in their lives.  Wouldn’t you like to be one of the people who make a difference!  Hospice volunteers provide varied support for patients and their families, including reading, watching TV, playing cards, doing errands, light housekeeping etc.  Most volunteers donate 1-4 hours of their time per week.  This comprehensive training course will cover the hospice philosophy, grief and loss, bereavement issues associated with the end of life, effective listening skills, and much more.  This course is not recommended for anyone who has experienced the death of a loved one within the last 12 months. Last class will be Wentworth Hospice facility in Somersworth to meet staff and tour the facility.

The Write Track-taking control of your writing

Have a character that just won’t listen? Trouble finding the time to write? Can’t decide if the world you built is immersive enough?  Worried your story idea isn’t interesting?  Want to make writing a part of your life but not sure how to begin….or how to make it stick?  Welcome to the growing pains of writer hood.  Fret not, these issues and many more are normal!  For 6 weeks, we’ll learn strategic ways to help you take control of your writing.  Writers will be given inspirational writing prompts, strategies to overcome writer’s block, story structure checklists, goal-setting schedules, and more to help them get on the “write” track with their project and move forward.  Time outside of class will be used to share your work for feedback.  Writers will need a work in progress or a figment of a story idea. She was chosen to contribute an essay for Wolf Warriors, a pro-wolf anthology, published in 2014.  In 2011, her short story "Treasures" won first place and is published in The Greensilk Journal.  She has written a non-fiction ebook series based on her popular blog post series "Writer...Uninterrupted."  The first book of the series, Handbook for the Emergin Writer, was published in July 2015, and is the foundation for this particular class.

Chinese Calligraphy

No prior knowledge of the Chinese language is required for this introductory course. Students with some basic knowledge of Mandarin will be given more advanced instruction. Introduction to Falun Gong

Organic Gardening Skills & Issues

This course will include practical tips on how to create a new garden, soil preparation, seed starting, planting techniques, container gardening, cultural techniques during the growing season (such as watering, fertilizing, and pest and weed control), how plants and soil interact, succession planning, planting multiple crops in the same space at the same time, how to compost, crop rotation, cover cropping and mycorrhizobials.  There will also be discussion about our existing industrial food production system including pesticides, genetically modified seeds, seed labeling and supplier concentration, globalization & famine, organic certification, and regulatory capture.

Years ago he left the seacoast area of Maine, moving to the deep south.  This move influenced his love of rural blues.  Accompanied by his wife Bev, Mike performs in public schools, retirement centers and public concerts bringing his love of the harmonica to special need students and the general population in for the form of concerts and harmonica workshops.  During the International Paralympics in 1996 in Atlanta, GA Mike and Bev were part of the Very Special Arts performances.  They also participated in the 1999 International Very Special Arts Conference in Los Angeles, CA representing Maine and Georgia.

Beginner Photo Class On Location at Great Bay National Wildlife Refuge

This beginner class is for those who want to start to take their DSLR cameras off the “Auto settings” and explore some creative camera tools. Here you will be learning to use selective focus called “Depth of Field” to either blur out backgrounds or to make everything sharp in an image by controlling the Aperture and Shutter Speed combination (with ISO or “camera speed” settings) on your camera for landscapes, portraits, and close ups. Your camera should either be an advanced point and shoot that has settings to display a non-green “A” or “Av” setting or one that uses interchangeable lenses (DSLR). We’ll hike around a very level course at the Great Bay Wildlife Refuge. You’ll also learn to use your pop up flash outdoors for portraits and flower photography. We’ll also cover compositional techniques.

* We’ll meet promptly at 8:30 AM at the parking lot at the refuge. Take a right inside Pease Airforce Base, follow signs for refuge, then at rotary, continue on Arboretum Drive a few miles to the parking lot. I’ll have on a white hat.

He spent 12 years teaching at McIntosh College where he also researched and developed the successful Associate's Degree program in Digital Photography, where he also taught most of the courses. His book "The Graphic Designer's Digital Toolkit" is now in its 5th edition integrating traditional graphic design concepts with technologies in Adobe computer graphics. This American Heart Association Heartsaver First Aid course will teach participants how to recognize and help victims of medical and environmental emergencies and what to do if someone is injured. Subjects covered include, but are not limited to, allergic reactions, heart attack, stroke, seizures, breathing problems, diabetes, bleeding, bites and stings, heat and cold emergencies, head, neck and spinal injuries and more. We’ll get into all types of zoom lenses for certain uses, lens speed, range of sharpness or depth of field, what works and what limitations you’ll find with each, also different tripods for steady more sharp images. I’ll bring my own equipment for you to try out, and feel free to bring any of your own with your camera.  As time permits, we will cover special settings involving white balance, histograms, and using exposure compensation. Salsa-Water Bath Canning

Everyone enjoys a little salsa and chips for a party. Now you can learn to make your own by adding or removing ingredients.  You will learn tips on customizing your salsa.  The night of class you will make a basic salsa with jalapeno pepper, onions, tomatoes , and spices.  In order to make it in the allotted time,  a few steps will be prepared ahead of class, so you can preserve a jar to take home.  There will be several recipes for you to try at home as well.  Please have small towel or 2 potholders for carrying home your jar.  If you have long hair, please wear it up or wear a hat.
