The Arts Reflecting Reality: Contemporary Issues in Film and Television

For over a century, film makers and television storytellers have informed, moved, dazzled, and entertained audiences of their own time, while simultaneously leaving clues to the values and viewpoints of their eras to historians and anthropologists of today. This course will investigate how motion pictures on the large and small screen can reveal as much about the people who made and watched them as any other primary source. Students will evaluate films and express their own assertions and conclusions regarding the stories they tell. Each week, the class will investigate the history and culture of a decade of the 20th century, and then look at select films (and television programs when applicable) from that era. Students will make connections as to why the films were made and how they were received in the era, and then use the content of the films to draw conclusions about the cultural attitudes of the era. The class will view the entirety of some short films and television shows, and/or significant portions of others from week to week.
