Exploring English

This English class will cover all of the basics and more! You will explore what it means to be a reader and a writer by studying many of the traditional genres found in an English class. You will read and write about fiction, non-fiction, drama and poetry. You will create poetry, analyze literature, and discuss your discoveries as readers and writers. There will be a focus on building a vocabulary word bank, grammar and punctuation work, weekly writing prompts, as well as focused reading with written responses.  Students will be expected to complete readings and other work outside of class and come to class focused and prepared to discuss any and all assigned work.  Books and other materials will be provided for students to be returned at the end of the course. 1 adult high school diploma English credit

Merv Faulkner is a teacher of chemistry and is the Dover Shockwave Robotics coach at Dover High School. Mr. Faulkner retired as Chief Radioman in 1995 from the United States Navy after serving twenty-one years. He served on three submarines, one surface ship and several shore stations.  He received his Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry with a minor in Oceanography from Old Dominion University in 2002. He has been teaching chemistry and mathematics for fourteen years. Mr. Faulkner’s interests include: long-distance hiking, rugby, and world travel.

Beginning Guitar

This class is designed for beginners ranging from people who have never held a guitar before to those who can play just a few chords. The Write Track-taking control of your writing

Have a character that just won’t listen? Trouble finding the time to write? Can’t decide if the world you built is immersive enough?  Worried your story idea isn’t interesting?  Want to make writing a part of your life but not sure how to begin….or how to make it stick?  Welcome to the growing pains of writer hood.  Fret not, these issues and many more are normal!  For 6 weeks, we’ll learn strategic ways to help you take control of your writing.  Writers will be given inspirational writing prompts, strategies to overcome writer’s block, story structure checklists, goal-setting schedules, and more to help them get on the “write” track with their project and move forward.  Time outside of class will be used to share your work for feedback.  Writers will need a work in progress or a figment of a story idea. A published author, professional writing coach, freelance writer and editor.   This summer she won first place in Riverrun Bookstore's short story contest and her story "Shattered," is published in the anthology Compass Points: Stories from Seacoast Authors. She was chosen to contribute an essay for Wolf Warriors, a pro-wolf anthology, published in 2014.  In 2011, her short story "Treasures" won first place and is published in The Greensilk Journal.  She has written a non-fiction ebook series based on her popular blog post series "Writer...Uninterrupted."  The first book of the series, Handbook for the Emergin Writer, was published in July 2015, and is the foundation for this particular class.

Chinese Calligraphy

Introduction to Chinese Calligraphy.  An overview of the practice of Chinese written language technique, how to form the characters, what they mean, and how they sound.  Proper techniques for brush control, alignment of characters, and useful words will be presented. No prior knowledge of the Chinese language is required for this introductory course. Students with some basic knowledge of Mandarin will be given more advanced instruction. Brushes, ink and paper will be supplied by the instructor.

Introduction to Falun Gong

Years ago he left the seacoast area of Maine, moving to the deep south.  This move influenced his love of rural blues.  Accompanied by his wife Bev, Mike performs in public schools, retirement centers and public concerts bringing his love of the harmonica to special need students and the general population in for the form of concerts and harmonica workshops.  During the International Paralympics in 1996 in Atlanta, GA Mike and Bev were part of the Very Special Arts performances.  They also participated in the 1999 International Very Special Arts Conference in Los Angeles, CA representing Maine and Georgia.

Introduction to Beekeeping

In this session you will receive an overview of keeping bees with brief presentation about the time, commitment and financial considerations involved with this hobby.  EAS certified Master Beekeeper, Brian Pride, will review the equipment necessary to establish you own hive and options for placement of hives at various locations.  Seasonal management of hives, pests and diseases, and products of the hive will be discussed.  This is an interactive program, with time allotted for demonstrations, questions and answers.
